British specialty chemicals company (HQ London; INEOS Group subsidiary; Hull UK and Pudong China primary facilities); produces acetic acid, VAM (vinyl acetate monomer), and acetic anhydride at Hull UK (Saltend Chemical Park) and Shanghai/Pudong China. INEOS acquired BP's Acetyls business in 2021, adding VAM and acetic acid capacity to INEOS's chemical portfolio. INEOS Acetyls is one of Europe's largest VAM producers. The same INEOS that operates Runcorn chlor-alkali (supplying KOH for batteries) and North Sea oil and gas operations (through INEOS Energy) also makes VAM for paint binders from acetic acid and ethylene at Hull. INEOS is privately owned by founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe — who controls a group spanning chemicals, sports (INEOS Grenadiers cycling, Manchester United stake), and energy that few people outside the chemical industry have heard of.

The same Hull UK acetic anhydride plant that supplies pharmaceutical companies for aspirin synthesis also supplies the cellulose acetate industry — connecting two pharmaceutically and historically significant products through one UK specialty chemical facility. Beyond acetyls, INEOS Group's broader portfolio creates an unusual dual position: INEOS Runcorn (chlor-alkali) makes the caustic soda used in NMC battery cathode precursor washing, while INEOS Acetyls makes VAM for paint binders. INEOS Acetyls (formerly BP Acetyls, acquired by INEOS in 2021) traces its UK operations to the Saltend Chemical Park in Hull, East Yorkshire — one of the UK's largest integrated chemical complexes on the Humber estuary. The Hull acetyls plant was developed by BP starting in the 1990s using the Cativa process (rhodium-catalyzed acetic acid production from methanol and carbon monoxide — a cleaner and more selective route than the older Monsanto process). INEOS Group, founded by Sir Jim Ratcliffe in 1998 as a buyer of "orphaned" chemical plants divested by ICI, BP, and other majors, has grown to be Europe's largest private chemical company through a succession of acquisitions of divested assets that majors no longer wanted. INEOS Acetyls' acquisition from BP in 2021 for approximately $200M was consistent with INEOS's model of buying operationally efficient assets at non-strategic prices.
