    The current Ingersoll Rand Inc. (NYSE: IR) was created in 2020 when the original Ingersoll-Rand plc (a 150-year-old industrial conglomerate that included Trane HVAC, Club Car golf carts, and industrial tools) executed a complex strategic separation: it spun off its climate businesses (now Trane Technologies, which includes Trane commercial HVAC and Thermo King transport refrigeration) and simultaneously merged its industrial segment with Gardner Denver Holdings Inc. — creating a focused compressed air, vacuum, and power tools platform. Gardner Denver itself had a prior restructuring story: it was taken private by KKR in 2013, relisted as a public company in 2017, and then agreed to merge with Ingersoll Rand's industrial segment in 2019.
