Did you know2024
Innophos (Nashville TN, One Rock Capital Partners portfolio) produces technical MAP for fire extinguisher applications at its Coatzacoalcos, Mexico facility — from within Pemex's petrochemical complex. The same Innophos Coatzacoalcos plant also produces specialty phosphates for food (leavening agents in baked goods, acidulants in beverages, emulsifiers in processed cheese), animal nutrition (monocalcium phosphate for poultry feed), and industrial applications. A chemical company inside a Mexican national oil company's industrial park, making the chemical that fights fires AND the chemical that makes bread rise AND the chemical that chickens eat — all from the same site. Innophos is also the only clearly identified Western-hemisphere (non-Chinese) producer of fire-grade MAP at commercial scale.
Innophos ↗Origin2023
Innophos was created in 2004 through the acquisition of the phosphate chemicals business of Bunge Limited -- the same agricultural commodities company that processes soybeans and grains globally. Bunge's phosphate operations had been part of its fertilizer segment; Innophos was carved out as a specialty chemicals company focused on food-grade and technical phosphates rather than fertilizer. The Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz facility is located inside the Petroquimica Cosoleacaque complex, which is managed by Pemex (Mexico's national oil company) -- a specialty chemicals manufacturer embedded inside a national oil company's infrastructure, a legacy of Mexico's integrated petrochemical development model. Innophos went public in 2006, was taken private by One Rock Capital Partners for $932M in February 2020, and continues to operate as the only clearly identified Western-hemisphere producer of fire-grade MAP (monoammonium phosphate for ABC fire extinguisher powder) at commercial scale. An agricultural commodity company's spinout is the critical Western alternative to Chinese fire chemical supply.
