(Cranbury, New Jersey; private — acquired by One Rock Capital Partners in 2020 for ~$932M; formerly NYSE: IPHS) is a specialty phosphates company producing purified phosphoric acid and specialty phosphate salts for food, health, industrial, and agriculture applications. Innophos operates plants in Nashville, Tennessee (US largest specialty phosphates facility), Geismar, Louisiana, and Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico (thermal phosphoric acid using P4 sourced from Chinese and Moroccan supply chains). Innophos's Mexico Coatzacoalcos facility is one of the few remaining non-Chinese thermal process phosphoric acid plants in North America — it burns P4 (sourced externally) in a combustion tower to produce high-purity thermal phosphoric acid. This P4 dependency makes Innophos's Mexico operations directly exposed to Chinese yellow phosphorus export restrictions. Innophos serves food manufacturers (Kraft Heinz, Coca-Cola) for phosphate additives, and agricultural input companies for fertilizer-grade phosphates. The company's acquisition by One Rock Capital took it private in 2020.

    Innophos was created in 2004 by a series of corporate separations that traced through Rhodia SA (French specialty chemicals), Albright & Wilson (UK phosphate chemicals company), and ultimately to Monsanto's phosphate chemicals operations that Monsanto divested in the 1990s as it refocused on agricultural biotechnology. The chain: Monsanto divested phosphates → Albright & Wilson acquired them → Rhodia acquired Albright & Wilson → Rhodia sold the North American specialty phosphates operations to private equity, which formed Innophos. The company was taken public on NYSE in 2006 and taken private again by One Rock Capital in 2020. Innophos operates the Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico plant that is one of the last non-Chinese thermal phosphoric acid facilities in North America — burning P4 (yellow phosphorus, sourced from China and Morocco) in a combustion tower to produce the high-purity phosphoric acid that Coca-Cola requires for its beverage.     Innophos Holdings operates the Coatzacoalcos, Mexico plant as one of the last thermal-process phosphoric acid facilities in North America — burning imported P4 to make high-purity food-grade phosphoric acid that goes into Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and other carbonated beverages as an acidulant, into processed cheeses as an emulsifying salt, and into baking powder and leavening systems as SAPP (sodium acid pyrophosphate). Every can of cola containing phosphoric acid made in North America has a supply chain that runs through Chinese P4 electric arc furnaces in Yunnan or Hubei. The Coatzacoalcos plant's P4 dependency is entirely Chinese: there is no commercially viable alternative P4 source at the scale and purity Innophos requires. If China imposed yellow phosphorus export licensing (analogous to the gallium and germanium controls imposed in August 2023), Innophos could not operate its thermal phosphoric acid business and would need to reformulate its food-grade phosphoric acid products from wet-process sources — a multi-year technical and capital transition.
