IDT was acquired by Danaher in 2020 as part of the $21.4 billion acquisition of GE Healthcare Life Sciences — the same deal that gave Danaher the Cytiva brand and the Cy/CyDye trademarks. Danaher therefore simultaneously owns the Cy dye trademark (via Cytiva) AND manufactures Freedom Dyes, a portfolio of patent-free alternatives to Cy dyes (via IDT), that allow diagnostic developers to avoid Cytiva's own licensing requirements. This internal competitive tension within a single conglomerate — owning both the toll bridge and the road that bypasses it — is unique among diagnostic raw material supply chains.

Integrated DNA Technologies was founded in 1987 by Joseph Walder, a biochemistry professor at the University of Iowa in Coralville, Iowa -- a small city adjacent to Iowa City that would not appear on most lists of biotech hubs. Walder recognized that automated DNA synthesis (using phosphoramidite chemistry perfected in the 1980s) could become a commercial service for the molecular biology research community that had no access to custom synthetic oligos. IDT's Iowa location was initially a disadvantage in recruiting, but the company compensated with exceptional synthesis quality and became the preferred supplier to research universities globally. The company scaled into the largest custom oligo manufacturer in the world from its Coralville campus, which was eventually expanded to multiple international sites. Danaher acquired IDT in 2020 as part of the GE Healthcare Life Sciences transaction, putting an Iowa university spinout inside the world's largest diversified life science tools company.
