Indian Oil Corporation is India's national oil company and largest enterprise — tracked for its petroleum fuel operations. But IOC also operates the world's largest single-train LAB (linear alkylbenzene) plant at Gujarat Refinery (162,000 TPA), making it the primary supplier of the detergent surfactant intermediate to India's consumer goods industry. India's household detergent supply chain — the cleanliness of India's laundry and dishwashing — runs through the same government-owned refinery complex that supplies India's fuel. A strike, shutdown, or political decision affecting IOC's Gujarat Refinery simultaneously disrupts national fuel supply and national detergent supply. India's consumer goods analysts rarely model this single-point dependency.
Indian Oil Corporation Ltd ↗Origin2023
Indian Oil Corporation was established in 1959 under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's state-led industrialization plan, designed to reduce India's dependence on multinational oil companies (Esso, Caltex, Burmah-Shell) that then controlled Indian fuel distribution. IOC became the instrument for nationalizing India's petroleum infrastructure through the 1960s-70s. The 1973 OPEC oil crisis accelerated its expansion as the Indian government sought domestic control over the entire refining and distribution chain. Today IOC is India's largest company by revenue (~$100B) and operates India's largest LAB plant as a byproduct of its integrated refinery chemistry.
