IQE Ebro's sodium silicate solutions — primarily made for laundry detergent co-builders, industrial cleaning, and paper sizing — are also the activating chemical in geopolymer concrete formulations. Geopolymer concrete uses fly ash or slag (industrial by-products) combined with a sodium silicate activator to form a hardened binder without Portland cement (which requires kiln heating to 1450°C and releases ~0.8 kg CO2 per kg of cement). Sodium silicate-activated geopolymer concrete has approximately 40-80% lower CO2 emissions than equivalent Portland cement concrete, and is actively developed by national infrastructure agencies and construction companies seeking to reduce embodied carbon in buildings and infrastructure. IQE's sodium silicate supply is simultaneously embedded in the European laundry detergent supply chain (conventional use) and the emerging low-carbon cement supply chain (geopolymer activation) — the same IQE water glass that prevents redeposition of soil particles in your washing machine is also the chemical activator researchers propose to decarbonize the construction industry.
Industrias Químicas del Ebro S.A. ↗Origin2024
Industrias Químicas del Ebro (IQE) is headquartered in Zaragoza, capital of Aragon — a dry inland region of Spain crossed by the Ebro River, the largest river by discharge in Spain. Zaragoza sits where the Ebro emerges from the Pyrenees onto the arid Ebro Valley; the river's water provided industrial process water for chemical manufacturing in a region otherwise too dry for water-intensive industry. IQE's sodium silicate and zeolite production depends on abundant silica sand from the Ebro Valley and on the river for process water — the company's product line (silicates, zeolites) requires both quartz sand (abundant in the Ebro alluvial plain) and caustic soda for silicate synthesis. As a producer of zeolite 4A for Iberian and Southern European detergent markets, IQE fills the geographic gap between Slovenian and German EU zeolite producers and Spanish/Portuguese detergent formulators, reducing logistics costs for regional supply chains.
