Jacobi Carbons was founded in Gothenburg, Sweden as an independent activated carbon supplier serving European water treatment and industrial markets. The company built a global production network including large coconut shell AC operations in India and Sri Lanka, positioning it as a multi-feedstock AC producer. In 2014, Osaka Gas Chemicals (the chemicals division of Osaka Gas, Japan's second-largest urban gas utility based in Osaka) acquired Jacobi Carbons. The acquisition reflected Osaka Gas Chemicals' strategy of building global activated carbon scale: Osaka Gas's utility operations use activated carbon to purify natural gas (removing hydrogen sulfide and organic sulfur compounds), and the chemicals division had developed AC expertise from this utility application. By acquiring Jacobi Carbons, Osaka Gas Chemicals created a global AC business combining Japanese gas-purification technical expertise with Swedish water-treatment commercial relationships and South Asian coconut shell production capacity. A Japanese natural gas utility company's acquisition of a Swedish activated carbon trader now controls coconut shell AC production in India and Sri Lanka, supplying both European municipal water systems and international gold mining operations through a corporate chain that starts with a Japanese gas company in Osaka.
