Jena Bioscience was founded in 1999 in Jena, Germany -- a city with a centuries-old scientific instrument and optics heritage (Carl Zeiss founded his workshop in Jena in 1846, Schott glass started there in 1884). The company was established as a spinout from Germany's Max Planck Institute for Colloids and Interfaces research, commercializing nucleotide chemistry expertise developed in academic settings. Jena became one of the specialist suppliers of mRNA cap analogs and modified nucleotides that are required for pharmaceutical-quality mRNA synthesis. During COVID-19 vaccine development, there were only a handful of companies globally capable of supplying mRNA cap analogs at pharmaceutical scale -- Jena Bioscience, TriLink BioTechnologies, and a few others. A small German university spinout in Jena -- the optical instruments city -- was part of the emergency supply chain for the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines administered to billions of people.
