Producer
Jiaxing Zhonghua Chemical
China's largest vanillin producer and the single largest vanillin company globally. Founded 1976; 500+ acres; 1,300+ staff. Vertically integrated: produces 13,000 MT/year of guaiacol (vanillin's primary petrochemical precursor), 20,000 MT/year of glyoxylic acid (the other key Riedel synthesis input), 10,000 MT/year of vanillin, and 2,000 MT/year of ethyl vanillin. This vertical integration means Jiaxing Zhonghua is structurally insulated from feedstock price spikes that expose Western and smaller Chinese producers. With ~10,000 MT/year capacity in a ~13,000-20,000 MT global market, this single Jiaxing facility represents an extraordinary concentration of global vanillin supply.

Did you know2022
Jiaxing Zhonghua Chemical is the world's largest vanillin producer — best known as the source of the artificial vanilla flavor in most of the world's ice cream, baked goods, and confectionery. But the same glyoxylic acid it produces at scale (for vanillin synthesis) is also used as a pharmaceutical intermediate in the synthesis of trimethoprim (antibiotic), folinic acid (cancer chemotherapy adjuvant), and several cardiovascular drug precursors. A Chinese company that controls global vanilla flavor supply is simultaneously a critical upstream supplier for pharmaceutical active ingredients — two supply chains that no food ingredients analyst or pharmaceutical procurement analyst models as sharing a common Chinese chemical chokepoint.

Jiaxing Zhonghua Chemical was founded in 1976 during China's late Cultural Revolution period as a state-owned chemical enterprise in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province. It developed vanillin production through the Riedel synthesis route (guaiacol + glyoxylic acid) in the 1980s-90s and scaled aggressively to displace European and US synthetic vanillin producers on cost. By the 2010s it had become the world's largest vanillin producer, with a vertically integrated complex producing all key precursors — guaiacol, glyoxylic acid — on site at over 500 acres.
