Sabroe (JCI's Danish refrigeration brand) is expanding production of large ammonia heat pumps at its Holme, Aarhus facility as part of industrial decarbonization — using ammonia refrigeration technology in reverse (as a heat pump) to provide high-temperature process heat for industrial processes that currently use fossil fuels. A standard Sabroe ammonia heat pump can deliver thermal energy at 60-90°C from waste heat sources at COP (coefficient of performance) of 3-5 — meaning 3-5 units of heat from 1 unit of electricity. Food processors, dairies, and breweries that use natural gas for process heat can potentially replace it with large ammonia heat pumps. The same Frick/Sabroe compressor technology that has kept food frozen since the 1880s is now the hardware enabling industrial decarbonization in the 2020s — ammonia refrigeration running in reverse to deliver zero-carbon industrial process heat.

The Frick Company was founded in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania in 1853 by George Frick as a sawmill, then pivoting to ice harvesting equipment, then to mechanical refrigeration when artificial ice production became commercially viable in the 1880s. Frick's ammonia compression refrigeration systems enabled year-round cold storage — dramatically changing food distribution, meat packing, and brewing. By 1900, Frick was the dominant US refrigeration compressor brand. Johnson Controls (then involved in building controls) acquired Frick in the 1970s as part of its refrigeration equipment expansion. Johnson Controls also acquired Sabroe (Denmark, founded 1897 by Carl Sabroe) in 1997. Together, Frick (North America dominant) and Sabroe (Europe dominant) give Johnson Controls ~35% of the global industrial ammonia refrigeration compressor market.
