JX Nippon Mining is publicly known as a copper smelter, but their electronic materials division supplies copper foil that forms the current collector in every lithium-ion battery AND the conductor layers in every printed circuit board. Electrodeposited copper foil at 6-12 micron thickness is laminated onto the anode side of EV battery cells; the same FUKUDA brand foil at 12-70 micron thickness is the copper layers in PCB circuit boards. JX Nippon (through subsidiary Nippon Denkai and through Fukuda Metal Foil & Powder) manufactures copper foil for both applications using the same electrodeposition technology - the only difference is thickness and surface treatment. Their Pan Pacific Copper JV (with Toyota Tsusho) smells concentrate at Saganoseki to produce the cathode copper, which is then converted to copper foil at separate facilities. The same company that refines concentrate from BHP's Escondida mine into copper cathode also makes the foil that becomes the current collector inside the battery packs in Toyota's hybrid vehicles - vertically integrated from mine to battery cell in one supply chain.
