CADAM's Amazon kaolin is transported from mine to ocean export terminal via a logistics chain unlike any other industrial mineral in the world: kaolin slurry (70% solids in water) is pumped through a ~90-kilometer slurry pipeline from the Rio Capim mine area to a river loading terminal on the Tocantins river, where it is loaded onto specially-designed ocean-going kaolin slurry barges — low-draft vessels capable of navigating Amazon tributaries — and shipped down the river to Barcarena, Pará, for final export processing. The slurry pipeline technology is identical to that used for: iron ore slurry transport in Brazil's Samarco pipeline (which ruptured in the 2015 Fundão dam disaster), copper concentrate slurry pipelines in Chile and Peru, and phosphate slurry transport in Morocco's Office Chérifien des Phosphates network. The Amazon kaolin's river barge logistics system was engineered specifically because road and rail infrastructure was absent when the deposit was developed — making kaolin paper-coating supply (for European magazine printing) dependent on Amazon river navigation conditions, water level seasonality, and the ecological health of Amazon tributaries. A severe Amazon drought year — which affects river navigation depths — is simultaneously a risk for hydroelectric generation, soybean barge export logistics, and European coated paper supply.

European paper mills — particularly in Scandinavia and Germany — face a supply chain paradox with Amazon kaolin: the CADAM Rio Capim kaolin is among the highest-brightness available globally and is preferred for premium coated publication paper (magazines, catalogs), but environmental NGOs and consumer brand clients (particularly German and French premium magazine publishers) have applied pressure on paper mills to audit Amazon basin supply chain exposure. Mining in the Amazon basin raises deforestation, indigenous rights, and biodiversity concerns that Georgia or Cornwall kaolin do not. European paper mills caught between quality requirements (CADAM brightness) and ESG sourcing commitments are in a difficult position: alternative kaolin sources exist (Georgia, Cornwall) but at lower brightness or higher cost. CADAM's Amazon origin creates a supply chain where the ESG risks of a mining operation in the Brazilian Amazon sit directly upstream of every glossy European fashion magazine and premium food packaging label — a provenance chain that brand marketing teams and sustainability officers have only recently begun to track.

  • Origin2024

KaMin LLC / CADAM emerged from the combination of Georgia kaolin mining operations and CADAM (Companhia de Mineração do Rio Capim), a Brazilian kaolin mining company operating at the Rio Capim fluvial deposit in Pará state, deep in the Brazilian Amazon. The Rio Capim kaolin was discovered in the 1970s and represents an extraordinary geological anomaly: a high-brightness, low-iron kaolin deposit formed in fluvial sediments along an Amazon tributary river — completely different geological origin from Georgia's weathered feldspar kaolin but comparably bright. CADAM was held by Rio Tinto's mineral extraction portfolio before being divested to Bain Capital as part of private equity consolidation of industrial minerals. The combined KaMin/CADAM entity mines in two of the world's three premium kaolin districts simultaneously — the only kaolin company with both US and Brazilian Amazon premium deposits — creating geographic supply diversification not available to Georgia-only competitors. Bain Capital's ownership drives extraction rate optimization and cost discipline for eventual exit, creating different operational incentives than foundation-owned Imerys or family-owned Thiele.
