Origin2022
PT Kirana Megatara (IDX: KIRO), listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, is one of Indonesia's largest natural rubber processors and represents the Indonesian side of a global rubber duopoly with Thailand: together, Thailand and Indonesia account for approximately 70% of world natural rubber supply, with both countries sourcing predominantly from smallholder farms rather than large corporate plantations. Indonesian smallholder rubber (the raw material for Kirana Megatara's SIR20 production) is processed under dramatically different quality control conditions than plantation rubber — cup lump collected from millions of individual farmers arrives at varying moisture content, cleanliness, and rubber content, requiring extensive processing (milling, drying, crumbling, baling) at Kirana's Sumatra factories before it meets SIR20 specification. The price difference between SIR20 and higher-grade materials reflects this heterogeneity premium: tire manufacturers accept SIR20 because modern compound mixing can accommodate the variability that plantation-sourced rubber would eliminate. Kirana Megatara's business model depends entirely on maintaining buying relationships with Sumatran smallholder farmers who have the option to sell to competing processors or to non-rubber crops — a fragmented upstream that the company cannot vertically control.
