The process

  1. 01

    Compound mixing

    Natural and synthetic rubbers blended with carbon black or silica, processing oils, sulfur, zinc oxide, antioxidants, and accelerators in internal mixers (Banbury mixers) at ~150-160°C to produce homogeneous compound sheets.

  2. 02

    Component preparation

    Steel cords calendered with rubber for belt plies; textile cords (nylon, polyester, aramid) calendered for carcass plies; bead wire formed and rubber-coated; tread and sidewall compounds extruded to profile.

  3. 03

    Tire building

    Automated tire building machine (TBM) assembles carcass plies, bead bundles, inner liner, sidewalls, and belt-tread package into a "green tire" (uncured assembly). Passenger car tires assembled in ~60-90 seconds on modern TBMs.

  4. 04

    Vulcanization (curing)

    Green tire loaded into hydraulic press with heated mold (bladder inside); cured at ~170°C under pressure for 10-20 minutes. Sulfur cross-links rubber chains, converting soft compound to elastic, durable tire. Mold imprints tread pattern and sidewall text.

  5. 05

    Quality inspection

    Finished tire subjected to uniformity testing (force variation, balance), X-ray inspection for internal defects, visual inspection, and dimensional checks. OEM tires undergo additional performance validation. Reject rate <0.5% in high-efficiency plants.

  6. 06

    Distribution

    Tires shipped to OEM assembly plants (for new vehicles, typically on consignment), regional distribution centers, or retail tire dealers. OEM supply chains are pull-based with just-in-time delivery; replacement tires often stocked regionally.
