Origin2023
KME SE traces to industrial copper working in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony — a manufacturing city in the North German Plain with copper fabrication heritage dating to the 19th century industrial era. The KME entity was formed through successive European copper industry consolidations in the 1990s-2000s: Kabelmetal (German cable and copper company), Europa Metalli (Italian copper fabricator), and related companies merged to create KM Europa Metal, which became KME. The Italian parent lineage traces to the Intek Group, the Milan-based private equity firm that controls KME. European copper tube manufacturing has been consolidating for decades as US and Asian competition increased; KME and Wieland are now the two dominant European copper tube and rod fabricators. KME's Osnabrück complex processes copper cathode (sourced from Chile, Peru, and recycled scrap) into finished tube, rod, and strip — serving the European construction (plumbing), HVAC (refrigeration tube), and electrical (copper rod for wire) industries. The European construction plumbing supply chain and the European HVAC and refrigeration supply chain share the same Osnabrück copper fabrication infrastructure.
