Kohler Power Systems

Kohler Co. Power Systems Division (Kohler, WI; private family company founded 1873; ~$8B+ revenue across all divisions) is the only major manufacturer that produces both generator sets (engine + alternator) and automatic transfer switches under one brand, enabling fully integrated backup power systems. Kohler manufactures residential through industrial ATS (100A to 3,000A); its residential ATS units (RXT series) are tightly integrated with Kohler's residential standby generators (7.5kW-150kW). The Kohler integration is a key competitive advantage — one vendor for engine, alternator, and transfer switch eliminates integration failure modes and liability boundaries. Kohler manufacturing is centered in Kohler, WI and Hattiesburg, MS for generators; ATS manufacturing is also at the Kohler, WI campus. Kohler is a significant supplier to military and government facilities seeking single-vendor integrated systems.

  • Did you know2024

Kohler is best known to consumers for its Kohler-branded faucets, toilets, and bathtubs (the plumbing fixtures supply chain — typically tracked by construction material and home improvement analysts). But the same Wisconsin family company also makes Kohler Power Systems generators and automatic transfer switches — the backup power infrastructure for hospitals, data centers, and commercial buildings. The bathroom design magazine feature about a Kohler rain shower system and the hospital facilities manager's procurement of a backup generator come from the same 150-year-old private family company in Kohler, Wisconsin. No other company in the world spans luxury consumer bathroom fixtures AND critical healthcare backup power generation under the same family ownership.

  • Origin2023

Kohler Co. was founded in 1873 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin by John Michael Kohler — an Austrian immigrant who had purchased an iron and steel foundry. Kohler pivoted from farm equipment to enameled iron plumbing fixtures in 1883 when he combined a horse trough with a cast iron seat to create an early bathtub. The company built the entire model village of Kohler, Wisconsin in 1917 — one of America's most famous company towns, with Tudor-style employee housing designed by Frederick Law Olmsted's firm. Kohler expanded into power generation (generators and transfer switches) in the mid-20th century, creating the unusual combination of luxury bathroom fixtures and critical infrastructure backup power in one private Wisconsin family company.
