Origin2023
Krempel Group is a German Mittelstand company that has made transformer insulation materials for over 100 years from its base in Vaihingen/Enz, Baden-Württemberg. Like Weidmann in Switzerland, Krempel built its business on the specialized electrical-grade paper and pressboard needed for transformer insulation -- developed as the transformer industry scaled up in the early 20th century. Both Weidmann and Krempel supply the same global transformer manufacturers (ABB, Siemens, Hitachi Energy, Schneider), creating a duopoly-like structure for high-quality transformer insulation in Western markets. When transformer lead times extended to 3+ years in 2023-2024 due to grid modernization demand, the upstream constraint was partly transformer insulation materials capacity -- Weidmann and Krempel combined could not quickly expand their specialized pressboard production, which requires long cure times and specialized equipment.
