Kromberg & Schubert was founded in 1902 in Germany — making it one of the oldest automotive wire harness manufacturers in the world, predating the mass automobile era itself. The company was founded as an electrical wire manufacturing business during the early electrification of Germany, when both household and industrial electrical infrastructure was being built. As the German automobile industry emerged in the early 20th century (Daimler, Benz, and then BMW), K&S transitioned to serving automotive wiring needs. The company remained private and family-controlled for over 120 years while growing to 50+ plants in 40 countries and 48,000 employees. K&S built significant production capacity in western Ukraine beginning in the 2000s-2010s, taking advantage of lower labor costs than Western Europe for the labor-intensive harness assembly process. When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, K&S faced immediate disruption to its Ukrainian operations, contributing to European automotive production shutdowns as harness shortages propagated to OEM assembly lines. The 1902 German wire manufacturer's Ukraine geography, chosen for labor cost arbitrage, had become a geopolitical supply chain vulnerability that disrupted BMW and Mercedes-Benz production 120 years after the company's founding.
