The raw material behind many pearlescent pigments and cosmetic shimmer is natural mica, and the mica supply chain is infamous for child labor: a large share of natural mica is mined illegally in India and Madagascar, often by children in dangerous conditions. So the shimmer in cosmetics and the pearl in coatings can carry a serious human-rights supply-chain risk, and the industry has faced sustained pressure to clean up its mica sourcing or switch to synthetic mica — lab-grown and child-labor-free — which Kuncai also makes. So a pretty, seemingly frivolous product, cosmetic shimmer, sits on one of the more troubling supply chains in consumer goods: the same chain-of-custody and ethical-sourcing theme the radar finds in conflict gold, forced-labor cotton, hand-knotted rugs and tropical charcoal. The sparkle in a child's makeup may, with grim irony, have been mined by a child — which is exactly why synthetic mica is becoming a supply-chain-ethics decision, not just a technical one.
