  • Did you know2024

KW Plastics — a plastics recycler in Troy, Alabama — is one of the closed loops of the automotive battery world. It is the largest recycler of the polypropylene cases of spent lead-acid car batteries: when a dead battery is recycled for its lead, the plastic case is ground, washed and re-pelletized, often straight back into new battery cases. So a company people would file under "recycling" is structurally embedded in the automotive-battery supply chain, turning the casing of every junked car battery back into the casing of the next one. The lead gets the headlines; the polypropylene quietly circulates through one Alabama recycler.

As recycled-content mandates and corporate "PCR" (post-consumer resin) pledges spread, recycled plastic shifts from a nice-to-have to a legally and contractually required input — and the supply of high-quality, low-contamination PCR-HDPE and PP is genuinely scarce. KW Plastics, as the world's largest plastics recycler, becomes a gating supplier for those commitments: a brand that has promised 25% recycled content in its bottles needs clean recyclate that only a handful of recyclers can deliver at scale and spec. The constraint on "sustainable packaging" is not virgin plastic — it is clean recyclate, and that supply is concentrated in a few private operators, with KW the largest.

  • Origin2024

KW Plastics is a family-owned business in rural Alabama that grew into the largest plastics recycler on the planet — a reminder that critical recycling infrastructure, increasingly load-bearing for packaging and automotive supply chains as recycled-content rules tighten, is concentrated in a small number of private, regionally rooted operators rather than in household-name industrial firms. The resilience of recycled-resin supply therefore depends on companies most of their downstream customers' consumers have never heard of.
