Lenzing makes one material — wood-based cellulosic fiber — that touches the body in a remarkable number of disguises. Spun as TENCEL lyocell or modal it is the soft fiber in clothing and bedsheets; as tampon-grade viscose it is inside feminine-hygiene products; as nonwoven viscose or lyocell it is the substrate of baby wipes and facial and cleaning wipes; and as flame-retardant rayon it is the fire barrier sewn into mattresses. So a single Austrian company, turning dissolving wood pulp into fiber, sits across apparel, feminine hygiene, baby and personal care, and bedding fire safety at the same time — and ties every one of those consumer categories back to forestry and the supply of dissolving wood pulp. The fiber is the same; only the form changes.

The push to get plastic out of single-use products runs straight into Lenzing. As regulators restrict plastic (polyester/polypropylene) in wet wipes and single-use items and brands promise "plastic-free" and biodegradable products, demand shifts onto wood-based cellulosic fibers — exactly Lenzing's domain. But the world's supply of hygiene- and nonwoven-grade viscose and lyocell comes from a small set of producers, so the sustainability transition of the wipes and hygiene industries is gated by a handful of cellulosic-fiber makers and the dissolving-pulp supply behind them. Environmental policy on single-use plastics therefore flows directly into demand for, and the supply security of, a narrow tier of wood-based fiber companies, with Lenzing at the front.
