Leoni AG was founded in 1917 in Nuremberg, Bavaria as Leonische Drahtwerke — a wire manufacturer whose name derives from "Leonisches Draht" (leonine thread), the term for the decorative metallic gold and silver thread historically made in Nuremberg for embroidery and luxury goods. Nuremberg was the center of European goldsmith and metalwork craft from the medieval era, and the same Nuremberg metalworking tradition that produced fine decorative wire evolved into industrial electrical wire manufacturing in the 20th century. Leoni pivoted from decorative metallic thread to industrial wire during Germany's electrification era, and then to automotive wiring harnesses as the German auto industry scaled. The company became a major European harness supplier with significant manufacturing in Ukraine (western Ukraine, near the Polish border) — a location chosen for lower labor costs than Western Europe. Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine forced Leoni to evacuate and temporarily shut its Ukrainian harness plants, contributing to supply disruptions at Volkswagen, BMW, and other European OEMs. In 2024, Chinese company Luxshare Precision — an Apple supply chain manufacturer that makes AirPods cases and iPhone components in Dongguan — acquired 51% of Leoni, making a Chinese consumer electronics supplier the majority owner of a German automotive harness company. The same Chinese factory that packages your AirPods now controls a company that wires Volkswagen cars.
