Leprino Foods Company

HQ US · Coloradowebsite ↗

American private dairy company (HQ Denver CO; ~$5B revenue; family-owned by the Leprino family); world's largest manufacturer of mozzarella cheese (the cheese on most US pizza — every Pizza Hut, Domino's, and Papa John's pizza in the US and globally uses Leprino mozzarella or Leprino has significant market share). As the world's largest mozzarella maker, Leprino generates enormous whey streams that are processed into WPC for infant formula and sports nutrition markets. Leprino's WPC is used by major infant formula manufacturers including Abbott Nutrition (Similac). The same Colorado family company that makes the mozzarella on your pizza also makes the whey protein in Similac infant formula. Leprino is the classic invisible industrial giant — enormous scale and market dominance with essentially zero consumer name recognition.

Leprino Foods (Denver CO; family-owned by the Leprino family; ~$5B revenue) is the world's largest mozzarella cheese manufacturer — the hidden company behind the cheese on virtually every major US pizza chain (Pizza Hut, Domino's, Papa John's have Leprino as a major or exclusive supplier). As the world's largest mozzarella maker, Leprino generates an enormous whey byproduct stream (approximately 9 pounds of whey per pound of mozzarella made), which it processes into whey protein concentrate used in infant formula (Abbott Similac), sports protein supplements, and food ingredients. One private Colorado family company simultaneously determines: (1) the cheese quality on most US chain pizza orders; (2) a portion of the protein quality in Similac infant formula; and (3) the protein content in many sports nutrition products. Leprino Foods does not appear on any stock exchange, files no public financial statements, and has essentially zero consumer-facing brand recognition despite being one of the most important food companies in the United States by volume.

  • Origin2023

Leprino Foods was founded in 1950 in Denver, Colorado by James Leprino Sr. -- an Italian immigrant who began making cheese in a small Denver shop. The Leprino family built the company through the 1960s and 1970s by becoming the preferred mozzarella supplier to the emerging US pizza chain industry. Pizza Hut (founded 1958), Domino's (1960), and the other early pizza chains needed consistent-quality, low-cost mozzarella at industrial scale; Leprino built its operations specifically to serve this demand. By the 1980s, Leprino was the dominant US pizza mozzarella supplier. The company has never gone public and files no public financial statements -- its revenues (~$5B estimated), margins, and market share information are not disclosed. The Leprino family owns 100% of what is likely one of the 100 largest US private companies. A 1950 Denver cheese shop run by an Italian immigrant became the invisible backbone of the US pizza industry -- and its cheese manufacturing byproduct became a significant source of infant formula protein.
