Lindsay Corporation was founded in 1955 in Lindsay, Nebraska when Charles Zimmerer invented and patented the first self-propelled center pivot irrigation system — the technology that enabled irrigated agriculture across the flat Platte River Valley. The center pivot (branded Zimmatic) allowed a single farmer to irrigate a quarter-section (160 acres) in a circle, replacing labor-intensive flood irrigation. Lindsay grew with the Great Plains irrigation boom of the 1960s-70s as the Ogallala Aquifer was tapped to convert dryland farming regions to irrigated corn and wheat. The infrastructure (road safety) business was added through acquisition in the 1990s-2000s as Lindsay sought revenue diversification from cyclical agricultural equipment markets.
