Marquis Energy LLC operates one of the largest single-site corn ethanol plants in the United States at Hennepin, Illinois — a facility on the Illinois River that exploits the river's barge system to move ethanol to Gulf Coast export terminals without rail or truck. Hennepin sits where Bureau County's dense corn production meets the Illinois River waterway system, making it a natural hub for agricultural commodity throughput. Marquis Energy, a private company owned by the Marquis family, built its competitive position on logistics arbitrage: barging ethanol is substantially cheaper than rail, and the Illinois River connects Hennepin to the Mississippi River system and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico. The same waterway that moved 19th century grain from the Illinois corn belt south now moves 21st century biofuel from the same geography to international export markets.
