MediaTek's Helio G and Dimensity 700-series SoCs simultaneously power: the mid-range Samsung and Xiaomi smartphones used by middle-class consumers in developed markets (the consumer electronics supply chain) AND the sub-$100 smartphones that provide billions of people in sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and Latin America with their first access to mobile banking, agricultural market price information, health service access, and economic participation (the global digital financial inclusion supply chain). The same MediaTek Helio G90T chip in an affordable Xiaomi Redmi Note is the platform on which M-Pesa mobile money operates for Kenyan farmers who have never had a bank account, on which Apollo Agriculture provides AI-powered credit to Kenyan smallholders, and on which Indian farmers receive daily commodity price alerts via WhatsApp. The global economic development and financial inclusion supply chain runs on MediaTek's cost-optimized chipsets, which were specifically designed to make computing accessible at price points where Qualcomm and Apple silicon cannot operate. A Taiwanese chip company's cost leadership strategy for mid-range smartphones created the hardware infrastructure for global mobile financial inclusion.

  • Origin2023

MediaTek was founded in 1997 in Hsinchu, Taiwan by Tsai Ming-Kai and colleagues who had previously worked at United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC). The founding team initially focused on optical disc controller chips (CD-ROM, DVD) — a declining market almost immediately, but one that gave MediaTek expertise in multimedia signal processing. The strategic pivot that defined MediaTek was the development of "turn-key" mobile phone solutions in the mid-2000s: MediaTek packaged not just a chipset but a complete reference design — hardware layout, software stack, and firmware — that allowed Chinese ODMs (original design manufacturers) to produce functional mobile phones without significant internal engineering capability. This dramatically lowered the barriers to entry for Chinese phone manufacturing and created the mass-market Chinese handset industry that would produce hundreds of millions of cheap phones per year. A Taiwanese chip company that started making CD-ROM controllers created the technological infrastructure for the Chinese feature phone manufacturing industry and subsequently became the world's largest smartphone SoC supplier, with approximately 30% global market share in Android smartphones.
