Origin2023
Finland has become a disproportionately important supplier of the antibodies inside global diagnostic tests, with both Medix Biochemica (Kauniainen, 1986) and HyTest Ltd. (Turku, 1994) having built global market positions in cardiac and fertility biomarker antibodies from a country of 5.5 million people. Both companies trace to the exceptionally strong Finnish biomedical research ecosystem and the lack of large pharmaceutical companies that would have otherwise absorbed the talent. Medix Biochemica supplies the hCG antibody pairs used in most home pregnancy tests globally and the troponin antibodies used in cardiac diagnostic tests -- the same Finnish antibody supplier enables the home pregnancy test bought at a US pharmacy and the cardiac emergency troponin test in a UK NHS hospital emergency department. Finnish biomedical research produced two of the most important upstream inputs to global point-of-care diagnostics.
