  • Did you know2023

Merck KGaA is simultaneously the world's largest supplier of liquid crystal materials (in the display panels of every LCD TV and monitor), a major supplier of OLED emitter materials (in the display of every high-end OLED smartphone), a provider of semiconductor photoresists and process chemicals (EMD Electronics, ~5-6% of semiconductor process chemicals market), a Sigma-Aldrich laboratory reagent supplier (in every university chemistry lab globally), and a specialty pharmaceutical company. The same German family holding company is critical infrastructure for display manufacturing, chip manufacturing, pharmaceutical research, and academic science simultaneously. A Merck KGaA supply disruption -- German regulatory action, catastrophic Darmstadt facility event, or family ownership crisis -- would simultaneously affect the display materials for consumer electronics, the semiconductor process chemicals for chip manufacturing, and the laboratory reagents for pharmaceutical drug discovery worldwide.

  • Origin2023

Merck KGaA was founded in 1668 in Darmstadt, Germany -- making it one of the oldest pharmaceutical and chemical companies in the world, predating the US Constitution by 119 years. Friedrich Jacob Merck bought the Angel Pharmacy in Darmstadt in 1668; the company was converted into a chemicals manufacturer in 1827 by Heinrich Emanuel Merck. After World War I, the US government confiscated the US subsidiary's assets and trademark (the American 'Merck' brand), leaving the original German company to use 'Merck KGaA' globally except in the US and Canada where it operates as EMD (Emanuel Merck Darmstadt). The Merck family still controls majority ownership of Merck KGaA through a family holding structure. Over 350 years, the same Darmstadt pharmacy dynasty expanded from apothecary chemistry into liquid crystal materials for LCD screens (Merck is the world's largest liquid crystal supplier), semiconductor process chemicals (EMD Electronics), pharmaceutical drugs, and life science research tools (Sigma-Aldrich, acquired 2015 for $17B). No other company of comparable age has such diverse technological reach.
