Meridian Bioscience was founded in 1977 in Cincinnati, Ohio, by William Motto as a supplier of diagnostic reagents to clinical laboratories. It grew steadily as a catalog supplier of enzyme substrates, diagnostic antibodies, and OEM raw materials for the in vitro diagnostics industry. The key strategic insight was selling not to end users (hospitals, clinics) but to other diagnostic companies — making Meridian's antibodies and enzymes an invisible ingredient in other manufacturers' branded test kits. Meridian was acquired by Madison Dearborn Partners (private equity) in 2021 for ~$1.5B, taken off public markets. The acquisition was timed around COVID demand — Meridian's PCR enzymes and respiratory antibodies were in enormous demand during the pandemic.
