  • Origin2023

Meridian Bioscience was founded in 1977 in Cincinnati, Ohio by William Motto, who identified the opportunity to supply antibodies and antigens to the then-emerging immunoassay diagnostic market. The company grew by specializing in gastrointestinal disease diagnostics -- C. difficile, H. pylori, norovirus, Giardia -- where Meridian had strong antibody development capabilities and where rapid accurate POC testing had clinical value. Its GI pathogen OEM antibody business became an invisible but critical component of diagnostic test kits sold by Roche, Abbott, and others. When COVID hit in 2020, Meridian rapidly pivoted its antibody manufacturing to supply SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and antigens to the hundreds of companies globally who needed to build COVID rapid tests -- Meridian's supply of validated COVID antibody pairs was used in dozens of FDA-authorized COVID antigen tests made by manufacturers who did not have their own antibody development capabilities. A Cincinnati GI diagnostics company became a critical upstream supplier for the global COVID testing infrastructure.
