Mitsubishi Materials Corporation traces to the Mitsubishi zaibatsu's mining operations — specifically to Mitsubishi Mining & Cement, which operated copper mines (Osarizawa copper mine in Akita, Takehara copper mine in Hiroshima) and cement factories since the Meiji era (1880s-1890s). The Mitsubishi family patriarch Yataro Iwasaki's merchant marine company acquired mining concessions across Japan as part of the zaibatsu's resource extraction strategy. Mitsubishi Mining merged with Mitsubishi Metal Mining in 1973 to form Mitsubishi Metal Corporation, which then merged with Mitsubishi Mining & Cement in 1990 to create Mitsubishi Materials Corporation. The current MMC is the direct descendant of 140 years of Mitsubishi family copper mining, cement production, and metals processing — one of Japan's original Meiji-era industrial conglomerates still operating under the Mitsubishi brand alongside Mitsubishi Motors, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and the Mitsubishi Corporation trading company.
