  • Did you know2023

Mondi plc simultaneously operates South African forestry plantations and pulp mills (supplying kraft paper raw material from managed forests in KwaZulu-Natal) AND European food flexible packaging manufacturing (supplying frozen food, meat, and dairy packaging to European food brands and supermarkets). Mondi's South African kraft pulp and its European plastic flexible films serve customers in completely different industries -- South African paper procurement and European food packaging procurement have no common monitoring. Mondi is also developing fibre-based alternatives to plastic for frozen food packaging (re/cycle FunctionalBarrier Papers), meaning it may eventually shift European frozen food packaging from plastic films (its current plastic film business) to paper-based products (its core forest-derived competency). A company that could eventually disrupt its own plastic film packaging business by transitioning European frozen food to its own paper-based alternatives.

  • Origin2023

Mondi plc traces its origins to the Mondi paper operations of Anglo American Corporation -- the South African mining conglomerate. Anglo American developed paper and pulp operations in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal Province in the 1960s and 1970s as a diversification from minerals. Mondi was spun off from Anglo American in 2007 with dual listings on the London Stock Exchange and Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The South African forestry and pulp heritage remains central: Mondi's South African operations include managed forest plantations and pulp mills that produce unbleached kraft pulp. Post-spinoff, Mondi aggressively expanded into European flexible packaging through acquisitions including Nordenia International (2012), Protective Packaging (2019), and Stellar (2022). A mining conglomerate's paper mill spinoff became one of Europe's largest flexible food packaging companies in 15 years through acquisition -- while retaining the South African forest-to-pulp operations.
