HQ US · Illinoiswebsite ↗

American salt company (HQ Chicago IL; K+S AG subsidiary since 2009); the most recognized salt brand in the United States — the Morton Salt Girl and 'When it rains it pours' slogan have been in use since 1914. Morton Salt produces pharmaceutical-grade NaCl (Morton Pharma brand) alongside its iconic consumer and food-grade products. Morton's pharma operations serve US IV fluid manufacturers including Baxter International and B. Braun. The company behind the most familiar American kitchen staple also manufactures the pharmaceutical salt that goes into the IV bags in every US hospital. Morton also road salt (de-icing) — the same company that keeps Chicago's streets clear in winter makes the NaCl in chemotherapy IV solutions.

  • Origin2023

Morton Salt was founded in 1848 in Chicago, Illinois (then a growing Midwest trading city) and developed the 'When it rains it pours' campaign in 1912 to advertise their free-flowing anti-caking salt -- one of the most durable brand campaigns in American history, still in use 110 years later. Morton grew through mergers with Joy Salt, Carey Salt, and other regional salt companies to become the dominant US salt brand by the mid-20th century. Dow Chemical acquired Morton in 1999 in an unexpected merger between a chemical giant and a consumer salt brand; Dow subsequently divested Morton's non-chemical businesses. K+S AG, the German potash and salt mining company, acquired Morton Salt from Dow in 2009 for $1.68 billion -- making a Chicago kitchen staple brand a subsidiary of a German mining company. K+S itself is 20% owned by the Midwestone Bank Iowa pension fund and trades on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. A German mining conglomerate now operates the brand most American children learn to recognize from the Morton Salt Girl on their parents' kitchen table.

Morton Salt (HQ Chicago, IL; K+S AG subsidiary) is the most recognized salt brand in the United States — the Morton Salt Girl umbrella logo and 'When it rains it pours' slogan have been used since 1914 and appear on tables in virtually every American kitchen and diner. Morton also produces pharmaceutical-grade NaCl (Morton Pharma) for IV saline bags, road de-icing salt for winter highway maintenance across the US, and water-softening salt for household water treatment systems. The exact same Morton Salt company — the one with the little girl in the yellow dress — makes the NaCl in hospital IV bags, the salt spread on Chicago highways in February, and the pellets in a suburban family's water softener. Three entirely different applications, three entirely different regulatory environments, one 110-year-old company.
