Samvardhana Motherson International (formerly Motherson Sumi Systems) was founded by Vivek Chaand Sehgal in 1975 in New Delhi — initially as a small wire harness manufacturer serving the nascent Indian domestic automobile market. In 1983, Sehgal formed a joint venture with Sumitomo Wiring Systems of Japan: "Motherson Sumi Systems Ltd" (MSSL). This partnership was transformative: it gave the Indian company access to Sumitomo's Japanese quality engineering methods, global automotive quality certifications, and relationships with Japanese OEMs (Toyota, Honda) that were beginning to establish presence in India. From this Indian-Japanese foundation, Sehgal pursued a rapid acquisition strategy targeting European automotive component companies: Smyth Group (UK automotive mirrors, 2009), SMR Automotive Systems (Germany, rearview mirrors — making Motherson the world's largest automotive mirror manufacturer), PKC Group (Finland, wiring harnesses for commercial vehicles), and others. The result: a company that Sehgal started with wire harnesses in 1975 Delhi is now one of the top-10 global automotive Tier-1 suppliers by revenue, present in 41 countries. Motherson is India's most successful story of scaling from domestic supplier to global automotive Tier-1 through a deliberate strategy of technology partnership (Sumitomo JV) followed by acquisition of specialized European leaders.
