Nammo's Vihtavuori facility in Finland produces propellant powder for NATO military ammunition contracts AND sells the same powder technology to civilian sport shooters globally under the Vihtavuori brand (N140, N150, N160, N550, etc.). Vihtavuori powders are internationally respected as the highest-consistency smokeless powder available for precision target shooting and hunting applications. American long-range benchrest competitors, European IPSC practical shooters, and hunters across 50+ countries specifically buy Vihtavuori-brand reloading powder. The Finnish factory that makes propellant charges for NATO small arms and artillery rounds ships the same powder chemistry to American sporting goods dealers under the Vihtavuori brand. A Finnish NATO defense company is therefore simultaneously part of Ukraine-era European rearmament supply chains AND part of the US civilian firearms ecosystem that is politically separate from defense procurement but materially connected.

    Nammo AS (Vihtavuori)
  • Origin2023

Nammo was formed in 1998 from the merger of Raufoss Ammunition Factory (Norsk Forsvarsteknologi AS, founded 1896 by the Norwegian government in Raufoss) and Finnish defense companies including Patria (Vihtavuori propellant plant). Raufoss AS had been the Norwegian state ammunition factory for over 100 years, supplying the Norwegian military through WWI, WWII German occupation, and the Cold War. The Vihtavuori propellant plant in Vihtavuori, Finland was similarly a state defense plant with origins in Finnish interwar independence. The merger created Nammo (Nordic Ammunition Company), now 50% owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Defense (through Nammo's holding structure) and 50% by the Finnish company Patria Oyj. Despite its state defense ownership, Nammo's Vihtavuori plant sells commercial reloading powders globally under the Vihtavuori brand -- making a NATO-aligned Nordic military propellant company one of the most respected names among civilian competitive shooters worldwide.
