Did you know2023
National Gypsum is a wallboard company that has quietly become a major consumer of coal-plant pollution-control byproducts: its plants source a large share of their gypsum from FGD (flue gas desulfurization) scrubbers at coal-fired power stations, where SO2-capture equipment produces synthetic calcium sulfate as waste. Every US drywall plant running on FGD gypsum is therefore supply-chain-coupled to the continued operation of coal power plants. As utilities accelerate coal retirements under IRA incentives, FGD gypsum availability is tightening — creating a supply disruption risk for homebuilding that originates entirely in energy policy, invisible to construction-sector analysts who track mining but not power generation.

National Gypsum Company was founded in 1925 in Buffalo, New York, growing through mid-20th century housing construction under the Gold Bond brand. It underwent bankruptcy in the early 1990s due in part to asbestos-related litigation stemming from earlier building materials products, then reorganized as a private entity. Today it operates 17 US wallboard plants that rely on a mix of natural gypsum from mines in Nova Scotia and the US and FGD synthetic gypsum purchased from coal-fired power utilities.
