Producer
NHU Group
Chinese specialty chemicals company (Shenzhen-listed); the most significant new entrant in the global methionine market. Started commercial production of a 150,000 MT/year DL-methionine line in October 2023 (after delaying from the planned June 2023 start due to the 2023 methionine price crash). NHU's entry was a key catalyst for the 2023 global methionine oversupply event that cut prices roughly in half from COVID-era peaks. Also produces vitamins (Vitamin E, Vitamin A) — the company is a major factor in multiple feed additive markets simultaneously.

Did you know2024
NHU Group is tracked in supply chain radars as a methionine producer (animal nutrition), but it is equally significant as one of the world's largest Vitamin E manufacturers. Vitamin E from NHU goes simultaneously into: (1) broiler chicken and swine feed, (2) human dietary supplements sold in pharmacies, (3) cosmetic skincare serums and sunscreens, and (4) pharmaceutical antioxidant formulations. The same isoprenoid chemistry plant in Zhejiang that sets the global floor price for poultry vitamin supplementation also sets prices in the personal care and supplement supply chains — sectors that procurement teams and analysts track in entirely separate databases, unaware they share a single Chinese supplier at the manufacturing origin.
NHU Group ↗Incident2023
NHU Group's entry into methionine production with a 150,000 MT/year line at Xinchang, Zhejiang in late 2023 was a key catalyst for the global methionine price crash. Prices that had exceeded $5,000/MT during COVID-era supply crunches (2021-2022) fell to approximately $2,715/MT in China and $2,830/MT in the US by December 2023 — roughly a 50% decline in 18 months. NHU delayed its startup from June to October 2023 specifically because the price collapse was already underway. NHU is not just a methionine company: it is simultaneously China's largest producer of Vitamin E and Vitamin A, giving it the ability to manipulate multiple feed additive prices in parallel.
ChemAnalyst ↗Origin2023
NHU Group (Zhejiang NHU Co.) was founded in 1994 in Zhuji, Zhejiang by Chen Yuehua, initially as a small-scale vitamins manufacturer. NHU grew by vertical integration into the isoprenoid chemistry supply chain — building acetone/acetylene and beta-ionone capacity to produce Vitamin A and E precursors domestically rather than importing them. It added DL-methionine in the 2010s by adapting the same sulfur-chemistry capabilities it had developed for other intermediates, entering a global duopoly that had previously been held by Evonik and Novus/CJ.
