Nippon Kodoshi's Kochi mills simultaneously produce, from the same wet-laid paper-making process with different fiber blends and formation conditions: (1) alkaline battery separator paper that sits between the zinc anode and manganese dioxide cathode in the Duracell and Energizer AA batteries in smoke detectors and TV remotes; (2) electrolytic capacitor tissue paper used in the capacitors of household appliance motor controls, industrial variable-frequency drives, and audio amplifier power supplies; and (3) cigarette paper controlling the burn rate and air permeability of cigarettes smoked by approximately 1.3 billion people worldwide. Three fundamentally different product categories — electrochemistry (batteries), electrical energy storage (capacitors), and combustion (tobacco) — share the same precision wet-laid paper manufacturing base in one prefecture of Japan. The same cellulose fiber dispersion and drainage control that produces a 12 µm battery separator at the right porosity also produces the 22 µm cigarette paper at the right air permeability. A disruption at NKK's Kochi facilities would affect alkaline battery supply chains, industrial power electronics capacitor supply, and global tobacco product manufacturing simultaneously.

Electrolytic capacitor paper — the ultra-thin alpha-cellulose paper used as the spacer medium in aluminum electrolytic capacitors — is manufactured by fewer than six companies globally: Nippon Kodoshi, Elna Paper (subsidiary of Elna Co.), Nichicon Paper, and two or three others. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are ubiquitous in all power supplies, motor drives, and consumer electronics (every laptop, television, motor, and industrial control system contains them). The global aluminum electrolytic capacitor market is approximately $5B/year, and while capacitor paper is a small fraction of total cost, it is a critical material with no easy substitution: the specific porosity, purity, and surface chemistry of capacitor paper affects capacitor voltage rating, ESR (equivalent series resistance), and lifetime. The capacitor paper supply chain — a handful of Japanese specialty paper mills — is effectively invisible in most electronics supply chain analyses, yet its disruption would propagate through the capacitor supply chain to affect every sector of the global electronics manufacturing industry.

Nippon Kodoshi Corporation is headquartered in Kochi Prefecture on Japan's Shikoku island, the same region where Japanese washi (hand-made paper) production has been practiced since the 8th century — Tosa washi from Kochi is designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
