  • Origin2023

NOF Corporation traces its origins to Nippon Oils and Fats Company, founded in 1937 as a merger of several Japanese edible oils and industrial fats companies. For decades it was a conventional oleochemical producer making cooking oils, soaps, and industrial lubricants. The pharmaceutical lipid business grew from NOF's expertise in fatty acid chemistry and phospholipid synthesis -- the same chemistry platform that produces lecithin (a food emulsifier) can also produce pharmaceutical-grade phospholipids for intravenous nutrition and drug delivery. When mRNA lipid nanoparticle delivery became critical in 2020-2021, NOF was one of perhaps three companies globally with the pharmaceutical lipid manufacturing capability to supply PEG-lipid components at pharmaceutical quality. The company that started making Japanese edible oils in 1937 supplied a key component of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 mRNA vaccine -- specifically the ALC-0159 PEG-lipid that stabilizes the nanoparticle formulation.

  • Did you know2023

NOF Corporation supplies PEG lipids and ionizable lipids that are components in mRNA vaccine lipid nanoparticle (LNP) formulations -- including Pfizer-BioNTech's COVID vaccine (NOF supplied ALC-0159 PEG lipid). The same NOF industrial peroxide chemistry division also makes organic peroxide crosslinking agents used in polymer manufacturing for cable insulation, automotive rubber seals, and foam plastics. A Japanese lipid chemistry company is simultaneously critical for mRNA vaccine production AND is a supplier of industrial chemicals for cable manufacturing and polymer crosslinking. Buyers in pharmaceutical supply chains and industrial polymer supply chains have no awareness of their shared supplier, and the Japanese oleochemical heritage connecting both applications would surprise both industries.
