NOF is a major maker of industrial explosives and rocket propellants. NOF Metal Coatings is the other half of the zinc-flake fastener-coating duopoly it shares with Dörken — and its Geomet/Dacromet system descends from Dacromet, the pioneering zinc-flake coating that first solved the problem of protecting high-strength bolts from rust without the hydrogen embrittlement that electroplating risks. Like Dörken, NOF doesn't coat most bolts itself; it licenses its chemistry to a global network of "job-coaters" who apply it, and automakers and turbine builders specify Geomet or Delta-Protekt by name in their engineering standards. So the anti-corrosion finish on the world's safety-critical fasteners comes down to two licensed systems — one German, one Japanese — applied through licensee networks. It's an unusually clean example of a hidden duopoly governing a part (the coating on a screw) that is simultaneously trivial-seeming and genuinely safety-critical, where the barrier isn't a single factory but control of the qualified, OEM-approved chemistry itself.
