Northam's UG2 Chromitite mining extracts both PGMs and chrome from the same ore layer — connecting the global PGM catalytic converter supply chain AND the stainless steel supply chain from the same South African mine. The UG2 Chromitite is a distinctive ore: it contains platinum-group sulfide minerals (PGMs) AND chromite (FeCr2O4) in the same rock. Northam separates the chromite as a byproduct, selling chrome concentrate to South African ferrochrome producers. South Africa produces approximately 75% of the world's ferrochrome — chromium-iron alloy that is the essential additive making stainless steel 'stainless' (minimum 10.5% Cr). Chrome from the same Bushveld reef that supplies automotive catalytic converters ultimately flows into the stainless steel in your refrigerator, kitchen sink, and industrial equipment. A South African PGM mine — producing metal for gasoline catalytic converters — is simultaneously producing a byproduct that makes stainless steel possible. PGM supply chains and stainless steel supply chains share the same Bushveld Igneous Complex mining operations.

Northam Platinum has achieved stronger production growth than the larger South African PGM producers (Amplats, Implats, Sibanye) in the 2020s partly through its mechanized mining approach at Zondereinde and Booysendal — using continuous miners and automated equipment rather than traditional hand-held drilling. Northam's mechanized UG2 Chromitite mining reduces dependence on large numbers of underground workers (who represent the primary labor dispute risk in South African mining) while accessing the UG2 layer's palladium-rich character. The Zondereinde mine at ~2km depth has expanded its production footprint while competitors have curtailed production during AMCU/NUM strikes. Northam's BEE (Black Economic Empowerment) structure — historically through Zambezi Platinum preference share scheme and now through its community trust — has navigated South Africa's mining charter requirements with fewer major labor disruptions than peers. A company with structurally lower strike risk and mechanized operations has captured market share from strike-affected Bushveld peers while South Africa's overall PGM output has plateaued.
