Novonix Ltd. (Halifax, Nova Scotia; ASX/Nasdaq: NVX; formerly known through its Dalhousie University spinout origins) is a North American synthetic graphite anode startup operating the only commercial-scale synthetic graphite anode production facility in North America. Novonix's Aiken, South Carolina facility (targeting 10,000 tonnes/year by 2025) uses a proprietary all-dry (no wet slurry) synthesis process that is significantly less energy-intensive than traditional Acheson furnace graphitization, and avoids the need for high-temperature furnaces sourced from China. Novonix received a US$103 million DOE Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains (MESC) grant in 2022 to scale U.S. synthetic graphite production. Customers include Phillips 66 (strategic investor), Samsung SDI (equity investor and offtake agreement). Novonix also operates a battery research services division in Halifax and a materials characterization business.

Novonix operates two distinct businesses: a commercial synthetic graphite anode production facility (the supply chain play, tracked by EV battery analysts) and a Battery Testing Service (BTS) that performs independent cell characterization and abuse testing for battery manufacturers and automotive OEMs (a research services business). The battery material producer is simultaneously the battery materials testing service for its own competitors — the same Novonix that Samsung SDI and GM source anode from is also being paid by battery makers to independently validate the performance of competitor products. This dual commercial role gives Novonix insight into competitor cell designs and performance benchmarks that most anode suppliers don't possess.

Novonix emerged from Dalhousie University's electrochemistry group led by Professor Jeff Dahn — one of the world's leading lithium-ion battery researchers and holder of a longstanding research partnership with Tesla (the Tesla-Dalhousie Battery Research Chair was renewed in 2016 for a multi-year term). Novonix commercialized battery testing equipment and anode material technology developed in Dahn's lab, then received major US government support under the IRA and DOE critical materials programs to scale its Aiken, South Carolina synthetic graphite plant as the first commercial-scale non-Chinese anode facility in North America.
