Nutreco's parent company, SHV Holdings (€28B revenue, Fentener van Vlissingen family, Utrecht Netherlands), is primarily one of the world's largest LPG (propane/butane) distributors — operating under brands like Primagaz (France), Calor Gas (UK), and SHV Gas in 28 countries, distributing LPG for residential cooking and heating in rural areas. The same Dutch private family company that fills propane tanks for French farmhouses also owns Skretting, which feeds 33% of the world's Atlantic salmon. SHV's businesses span: LPG energy distribution (SHV Energy), salmon aquafeed (Skretting), heavy lift transport (Mammoet — the company that moved the Costa Concordia cruise ship), and Dutch retail (Makro). A propane delivery company is simultaneously the dominant supplier of the food eaten by Norwegian and Chilean salmon farmers' fish.

  • Origin2023

Nutreco was originally the animal nutrition division of Royal Dutch Shell — spun off in 1994 and listed separately. Shell's involvement in animal nutrition came from its acquisition of Central Soya (US) and other feed companies during the 1970s-1980s conglomerate expansion. Nutreco's Skretting brand acquired Norwegian salmon feed company Skretting in 1999, which itself traced to Stavanger, Norway operations since 1899 — matching the century-long parallel development of Norwegian salmon farming. SHV Holdings (the Dutch private holding company primarily known as a global LPG distributor) acquired Nutreco in 2015 for €3.1B, removing it from public markets. In February 2026, SHV/Nutreco sold the Trouw Nutrition (livestock) division to CVC Capital Partners for €2.2B, refocusing Nutreco on the higher-growth Skretting aquafeed business.

  • Capacity2023

Nutreco's Skretting brand holds approximately 33% of the global unintegrated salmonid feed market. The top 3 suppliers (Skretting, Cargill-EWOS, BioMar) together control ~90% of feed to salmon farms not owned by vertically integrated producers (like Mowi/Marine Harvest, which makes some of its own feed). Atlantic salmon feed costs represent 40-50% of total farm production cost; the quality and omega-3 content of feed directly determines the salmon's flesh color, fat content, and market value. The replacement of wild-caught fishmeal and fish oil with plant proteins, algae oil, and insect meal in Skretting feeds is one of the most consequential ongoing food system transitions — if successful, it would decouple global salmon supply from Peruvian anchoveta quotas and reduce aquaculture's pressure on wild marine fish stocks.
