Indian cotton belt (primary states: Gujarat — Ahmedabad district, Saurashtra region; Maharashtra — Vidarbha region, Marathwada; Telangana — Warangal district); India is the world's second-largest cotton producer (~25% of global production) and largest cotton yarn exporter. Indian cotton is predominantly short-staple upland grown by smallholder farmers (average holding: 2-3 hectares), largely Bt cotton (genetically modified, approved India 2002 — now ~95% of Indian cotton area is Bt). Gujarat produces the highest-quality Indian cotton; Maharashtra's Vidarbha region is associated with farmer distress and suicide epidemics driven by cotton price volatility and debt cycles. Jinxiang, Shandong is designated 'the world's garlic capital' — China's largest garlic growing and processing county. China produces 80% of global garlic; Shandong is the primary Chinese garlic province; Jinxiang is the epicenter of Shandong garlic production and export. Most Chinese garlic exports for global food processing pass through or originate from Jinxiang-area processors. Not a single company — hundreds of processing companies operate here. Garlic powder, granules, flakes, and dehydrated garlic for processed meat are produced here.

Lampung, South Sumatra · farm

Lampung Province (southern tip of Sumatra, Indonesia; provincial capital Bandar Lampung) is Indonesia's largest Robusta-producing region — producing ~60-65% of Indonesian Robusta output. Indonesia is world's #2 Robusta producer (~10% global share). Lampung Robusta is distinctive for its earthy, full-bodied cup profile (result of semi-washed or wet-hulled processing — 'giling basah' — unique to Indonesian processing tradition) used widely in Italian espresso blends. North Sumatra also produces Robusta (Gayo, Mandheling regions) though these areas are sometimes marketed as Arabica from higher elevations. Olam Agri's West Africa cotton ginning network (primary countries: Côte d'Ivoire — Korhogo, Bouaké gin sites; Benin — Parakou hub; Cameroon — Garoua; Mozambique; Zambia; Zimbabwe); Olam operates 20+ cotton gins across Sub-Saharan Africa with total ginning capacity exceeding 200,000 metric tonnes of lint annually. West African cotton operates under the colonial-era filière system in francophone countries: private operators like Olam provide pre-season inputs (seed, fertilizer) to smallholder farmers on credit, organize collection, gin the seed cotton, and export lint bales. West African cotton (especially Benin, Mali, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire) is known for hand-harvested quality with low trash content and no Xinjiang contamination risk. CFA franc zone cotton also benefits from French government export market access. Olam's primary Vietnam black pepper processing and export facility; the largest single pepper exporter in Vietnam. 27,800 MT exported in 2024 (11.1% of Vietnam total, 19.65% by value). Binh Phuoc province is Vietnam's largest pepper-growing region. Olam operates farm-to-factory sourcing directly with Vietnamese pepper farmers, cleaning, grading, and processing to food-industry specifications.
