An onsemi manufacturing disruption -- quality hold on SiC wafers, fab earthquake (onsemi has facilities in East Fishkill New York and Roznov Czech Republic), or supply chain disruption -- would simultaneously affect washing machine inverter production (IPM shortage), EV production (SiC traction power), and automotive ADAS sensor availability (image sensors). The home appliance, EV, and automotive safety industries share an onsemi dependency that their procurement organizations monitor separately. onsemi traces its lineage to two pivotal semiconductor companies: Motorola's Semiconductor Components Group (spun off as ON Semiconductor in 1999) and Fairchild Semiconductor (acquired by onsemi in 2016). Fairchild Semiconductor, founded in 1957 by the 'Traitorous Eight' who left William Shockley's laboratory -- including Robert Noyce (who later co-founded Intel) and Gordon Moore (Moore's Law) -- was the first company to manufacture practical silicon transistors and integrated circuits for commercial application. Onsemi's 2016 acquisition of Fairchild brought 60 years of power semiconductor heritage from the company that essentially invented the commercial silicon semiconductor industry. The combined onsemi is now pursuing a strategic pivot from traditional IGBT power semiconductors (for appliances) to SiC (silicon carbide) power devices (for EVs) -- the same transformation that Mitsubishi Electric, Infineon, and STMicroelectronics are all pursuing simultaneously, creating a cross-industry demand surge for SiC substrate and epitaxial wafers.
