Orbia (formerly Mexichem, NYSE: ORC) is a Mexican specialty chemical and polymer conglomerate whose Fluor segment (Mexichem Fluor) is one of the largest hydrofluoric acid (HF) producers in the Americas. The company mines fluorspar at its San Luis Potosí operations and converts it to anhydrous HF and downstream fluoride compounds including sodium fluoride (NaF) for industrial and personal care uses. Mexichem Fluor UK (Runcorn, Cheshire, England — former ICI/Ineos Fluor site) is the primary EU/UK-facing NaF production facility. Orbia Fluor also produces refrigerant fluorocarbons (HFC/HFO). Together Mexichem Fluor UK and San Luis Potosí make Orbia one of the top three non-Chinese producers of fluoride compounds.

Orbia's HF production from Mexican fluorspar is the feedstock for five completely different critical supply chains: (1) refrigerant HFC/HFO production (the air conditioning and commercial refrigeration supply chain); (2) aluminum fluoride for aluminum smelting (added to the electrolytic bath to lower melting point — without AlF3 from fluorspar, aluminum smelters cannot operate economically); (3) semiconductor-grade HF for silicon wafer etching and cleaning (the same HF used at Orbia's Runcorn plant is a critical etchant in chip fabrication); (4) sodium fluoride for municipal water fluoridation and toothpaste (the same fluoride ion in your cavity-preventive toothpaste comes from fluorspar processing); and (5) uranium hexafluoride for nuclear fuel enrichment (UF6, used to enrich uranium for nuclear reactor fuel, is made from HF). A disruption to Mexican fluorspar supply would simultaneously constrain: air conditioning refrigerant production, aluminum production, chip manufacturing, dental cavity prevention programs, and nuclear power fuel supply — five supply chains that have no obvious connection to each other or to a Mexican mining operation.

Orbia (formerly Mexichem) grew from Mexican state industrial enterprises founded in the 1950s-1960s to serve Mexico's postwar industrialization needs, particularly for PVC and chemical feedstocks. The transformative asset was Mexico's position as the world's largest fluorspar producer: the San Luis Potosí and Coahuila states contain the most significant fluorite (CaF₂) reserves outside China, and Mexichem inherited and built on the state-era fluorspar mining infrastructure. Fluorspar is the only raw material from which hydrofluoric acid (HF) can be economically produced; without Mexican fluorspar, non-Chinese HF supply would essentially be limited to Chinese exports. Orbia's acquisition of Mexichem Fluor UK (the former ICI/Ineos Fluor facility at Runcorn, Cheshire, England) gave it European HF production using Mexican fluorspar feedstock shipped across the Atlantic — connecting Mexican geology directly to European semiconductor, pharmaceutical, and refrigerant industries. Orbia also acquired Wavin (European water infrastructure pipes) and Netafim (drip irrigation, Israel), creating a Mexican industrial conglomerate that combines fluorine chemistry, water pipes, and precision irrigation from its Mexico City headquarters.
