Wavin's parent company Orbia (formerly Mexichem) has an unusual cross-industry portfolio: it simultaneously owns Wavin (European PVC/HDPE building and infrastructure pipes), Netafim (world-leading Israeli drip irrigation), Koura (world-leading pharmaceutical HFA propellant), and Dura-Line (plastic conduit for fiber optic cable). Wavin pipes carry drinking water to European homes, drain building sewage, and distribute agricultural irrigation water. Koura's HFA 134a propellant is in 75% of global asthma inhalers. Netafim drip emitters irrigate crops from Israel to California to India. Dura-Line conduit protects fiber optic cables in internet infrastructure. Wavin was founded in 1955 in Dedemsvaart, Overijssel, Netherlands by Adriaan Meys — the company name derives from 'WAter VIa buizen' (Water Via Tubes) in Dutch. Wavin was one of the first companies to systematically replace cast iron and clay pipes in European water distribution with PVC thermoplastic pipe. PVC pipe was lighter, cheaper, corrosion-resistant, and could be installed without skilled caulking or lead-joint techniques required for cast iron. Wavin's PVC pipe expansion across the Netherlands, Germany, and Western Europe in the 1960s-1970s was a major contributing factor in European water infrastructure modernization. The company was acquired by Mexico's Mexichem (later renamed Orbia) in 2012 — in the same Orbia group that acquired Koura (HFA pharmaceutical propellants for asthma inhalers) and Netafim (Israeli drip irrigation). A Dutch water pipe company that began by replacing cast iron with PVC is now owned by a Mexican conglomerate that also makes the propellant in asthma inhalers and the drip irrigation system for Israeli and global farming.
