Pocari Sweat — Japan's most famous sports drink and one of Asia's most recognized consumer beverages — was invented because Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory's IV fluid researchers wanted to create an oral version of an intravenous electrolyte solution. In the late 1970s, Otsuka researcher Rokuro Harima was in Mexico, ate unsanitary food, and was severely dehydrated. He was treated with IV fluids and recovered. He had the idea that if the electrolyte balance of IV saline could be made into a drinkable format, people could rehydrate orally before requiring hospital IV treatment. The Pocari Sweat formulation (launched 1980) is directly based on human blood plasma electrolyte concentrations — the same ionic composition that Otsuka's IV fluid scientists work with. The name 'Pocari' was selected as a coined word sounding like it evaporates (from the body through sweat); the product marketing explicitly connects it to IV fluid science. A Japanese IV solution manufacturer invented the sports drink category because its researchers understood human electrolyte physiology better than any food company.
