    Outokumpu began as a copper mining company in 1910 in the village of Outokumpu, Finland — a remote town that gave the company its name when copper deposits were discovered there. From copper mining, the company expanded into copper smelting and then metallurgy. Outokumpu's most lasting global contribution came from its 1949 invention of the Flash Smelting process (Outokumpu Flash Smelting, OFS) — a pyrometallurgical method that feeds dry sulfide ore concentrate into a high-velocity oxygen jet, achieving autogenous combustion (the sulfide ore burns itself, requiring no external fuel). OFS is energy-efficient, recovers sulfur dioxide for acid plants, and is now the dominant process for copper and nickel primary smelting globally. Over 50 licensed OFS installations operate worldwide, including most of the major copper smelters in Chile, Japan, China, and Finland. Outokumpu eventually divested its copper business to focus on stainless steel — but its smelting process technology remains embedded in the copper production chain globally, long after Outokumpu itself left the copper industry.
